The seventeenth of the CAAD lecture series had architect Thirupurasundari Sevvel lecture on the topic “Understanding and Appreciating Heritage” on 20th February 2016.
The session started with an interaction with the students about their idea of heritage and heritage value and the understanding of tangible and intangible spaces. She also focused on why It is important to understand our own heritage and how this can be extended in the process of architectural design. This she elaborated with examples of her projects where she has used old techniques and materials. She also explained about the renovation works done by her practice focusing on the work at the Madras Literary Society (MLS), Nungambakkam in particular.
Next, she also explained in detail about the work done by her and her team at an initiative called “Nam Veedu Nam Oor Nam Kadhai”. Focusing on the current effort of the initiative, she explained how they were able to collect information using various cues to bridge the knowledge gap in the history and heritage of Anna Nagar.
Mr. H. Karthiban, Coordinator of the lecture series felicitated the speaker with a memento at the end of the session. The event concluded with vote of thanks by CAAD student representative followed by high tea.
