The ninth workshop at CAAD was conducted by architect A. Arul on the topic “Conservation of Heritage Building through Documentation” on 25th February 2016.
Architect A. Arul briefed the students about documentation, its importance and methods of handling the surveying equipments. He explained the documentation process through sheets and videos. He presented few of his documentation sheets and focused on the details in the buildings.
He interacted with the students regarding measured drawing difficulties and briefed them about the compilation of the drawings. Videos on the restoration and documentation of the Bungalow on the Beach and the Governor’s house at Tranquebar by INTACH which focused on the status, methods of analyzation, renovation and importance of documenting a heritage building. He focused on the importance of materials and methods of construction of heritage buildings.
The difference between the Franco-Tamil architecture and Dutch-Tamil Architecture of Pondicherry and Tranquebar was discussed by comparing the architectural features of Tamil architecture such as Thinnai, Thalavaram, Muttram etc., with the French and Dutch architectural features of cornice, plaster, parapet detail, madras terrace roof, vault roof construction etc.
Prof. Vinodh Vijayakumar, Director of CAAD felicitated the speaker with a
memento at the end of the session. The event concluded with vote of thanks by
a CAAD student representative and high tea.
