CAAD has built a tradition of engaging the territory in the tutoring methods of Architecture Education in partnership with Universities of International repute. The current year CAAD International Studio is based in Singapore. CAAD Students during a very engaging session at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)The site for the Studio – The Urban Affiance was chosen in the heart of Singapore’s Central Business District. A series of lectures on the Singapore planning lessons from stalwart Architect Planners, visits to various ethnic conclaves along with the long guided urban walks positioned the students in perspective of the urban scenario.CAAD strives to nurture a new breed of architects abreast with the emerging technologies in the field of architecture. The Singapore International Studio 2019 gave the students a first hand experience of cutting-edge technology in immersive architecture. Students having an experiential learning of VR enabled design process at ID Architects, one of the vanguard international practices based in Singapore.
CAAD students visited to the Singapore City Gallery as a part of the CAAD International Studio which enabled them to develop an informed perspective about the visionary planning approaches and implementation strategies at Singapore. The architecture and the urban planning lessons from Singapore were a valuable takeaway to pursue with conscious adaptation to our context.
CAAD Singapore international studio mentors who were also acclaimed planners took the students through the New Towns of Singapore and deliberated the lessons of sustainability through the lessons from New Town model of Punggol. Learning from the housing precincts, waterfront developments, smart schools, transportation hubs were all vital lessons the students garnered from the CAAD Singapore Studio 2019
CAAD teams represented by student mix from all years presented the final proposal on the project ‘Urban Affiance’ at the SUTD – Singapore University of Technology and Design. The working sessions were interactive, intriguing and intense. The presentations were well received by the professors at SUTD who appreciated for the quick grasp of context, strong cultural connect and presentation finesse.
The CAAD Singapore International Studio final critique session evolved as a platform of discussion for application of the Singapore learning in the Indian context. The programme concluded ceremoniously with a certificate award function. The professors from both SUTD- Singapore University of Technology and Design and CAAD-Chennai Academy of Architecture and Design found the studio mutually beneficial and academically enriching.
