The sixteenth of the CAAD lecture series had architect and conservationist Zoyab Alihussain Kadi of Chennai lecture on the topic “High Vernacular Architecture of Sidhpur and Panoroma of Indian Architecture” on 28th January 2016.
During the first session, Ar. Zoyab presented a full panorama of the timeline of Indian architecture right from the Indus Valley Civilization to Indo Saaracenic Architecture. Various geographical, cultural,historical, religious and climatic factors that contributed to the architecture during the different periods were also discussed in detail. This session concluded in a quiz session where students enthusiastically answered various historical questions by Ar. Zoyab.
The second session started with an introduction on the historical and religious significance of Sidhpur and how it reflected in the evolution of the place. The vernacular architecture of Sidhpur and its Dawoodi Bohra Houses were discussed in detail. The inspiration of Art Noveau and Neo-Classical sstyles that are evident in their architecture as a result of the trading done by the Shia Muslims was explained. The various components of the residential architecture and the space planning of the Dahwoodi Bohra houses reflecting the Hot and Arid climate of Sidhpur was presented to the students in great detail.
Our Director, Ar. Vinodh Vijayakumar felicitated the speaker with a memento at the end of the session. The event concluded with vote of thanks by CAAD student representative followed by high tea.
