To drift along the regular academic curriculum and to ensure a positive state of mind in approaching one’s life, CAAD has initiated an exclusive session titled, ‘The Skills Enhancement Program’ for students , that happens on a regular basis.
The session started with an interaction with the students about their idea of heritage and heritage value and the understanding of tangible and intangible spaces. She also focused on why It is important to understand our own heritage and how this can be extended in the process of architectural design.
Students got exposure to the methodology of conducting various surveys covering physical, visual characteristics and socio economic aspects. They were able to understand the vernacular and traditional architecture involving local building materials and construction techniques.
Architect A. Arul briefed the students about documentation, its importance and methods of handling the surveying equipments. He explained the documentation process through sheets and videos. He presented few of his documentation sheets and focused on the details in the buildings.
As part of Architectural Drawing –II, students did the measured drawing of the Zion church and the New Jerusalem Church. The prior date’s schedule was followed and also they were taken on a walk along the Tharangambadi beach and had a glimpse of the Danish Fort near the beach understanding Danish settlement.
Ar. Zoyab presented a full panorama of the timeline of Indian architecture right from the Indus Valley Civilization to Indo Saaracenic Architecture. Various geographical, cultural,historical, religious and climatic factors that contributed to the architecture during the different periods were also discussed in detail.
He deliberated on the difference between subjectivity and objectivity and thereby ascertained the importance of understanding the design briefs for every given exercise. The need for a sensitive approach to design keeping in mind the context was also probed. He explained the need for understanding the design vocabulary for effectively communicating design ideas.
As incessant rains have hit the people of Chennai severely, free bus services were in operation for the flood-hit people from various parts of the Chennai as part of CAAD - Chennai Academy of Architecture and Design Community Outreach Program.
Ar. Innisai commenced the lecture by explaining the difference between traditional architecture and vernacular architecture which are often interchanged. A glimpse of the various codes for construction and other abundant Sanskrit literature related to architecture that has been left unexplored were explained.
The entire study was divided into 2 sessions. On site, the students studied the building thoroughly by measuring it and preparing various sketches. The second session focused on the importance of documentation where the students translated the sketches done on site in the form of floor plans, elevations, sections, details, etc.,
